OFFICE OF THE PROVOST & CHIEF EXECUTIVE

The Provost is the Chief Academic Officer of the University, providing primary administrative leadership, direction, and evaluation for all academic activities and faculty affairs of the University. The Provost conducts the duties of the office of President of the University when the President is unable or unavailable.

The Office of the Provost supports the Springfield Research University’s community of scholars, their shared ideals, and the core values that make the University a singular intellectual destination. Together with the University’s deans, directors, and department chairs, the Office of the Provost shapes our rich and rewarding culture. We provide the opportunities, infrastructure, and resources that encourage our faculty and other scholars to pursue their finest work. 

ACADEMIC AFFAIRS

We are a systemwide resource for academic excellence in research, teaching and public service.

Academic Affairs builds on the energy and academic strength of SRU’s campuses to enhance the system’s educational impact. We help recruit and retain outstanding professors and provide them with the support they need to succeed. We promote excellence through programs that help prepare, recruit and support undergraduate, graduate and professional students. We manage programs that help position SRU as engine of economic, social and cultural development. And we ensure that SRU remains on the cutting edge of innovation in teaching and learning by supporting new academic initiatives.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Fosters intellectual growth, student learning and scholarly and creative activities by providing academic strategic planning, administrative leadership, direction, and evaluation for all academic activities and faculty affairs at the University, providing leadership in internationalizing the campus and advancing multidisciplinary scholarship, and providing leadership and guidance on diversity initiatives for faculty, staff, and students.

 

  1. Demonstrate sound fiscal management and empirical-based decision making by overseeing program development, budgets and facilities of all academic and academic support units.

 

  1. Ensures an active and expanding dialogue with external constituencies by encouraging partnerships with external constituents and public organisations, engaging in effective university advancement (including alumni affairs, fundraising, and advocacy on behalf of the institution), and facilitating the Public Affairs mission of the University.

 

  1. Implementing the strategic academic vision by authorizing faculty appointments, recommending all promotions and tenure decisions to the President, making final decisions about the allocation of academic space, working with senior leadership of the University in coordinating and overseeing the overall mission of the University.

 

  1. Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or courses as required.

 

  1. Contributes to the overall success of the University by performing all other duties as needed.

Deans, directors, and department chairs lead their respective academic units, including divisions, centers and institutes, departments, and the Faculty. They represent their faculties to the president, provost, and other governing bodies and work with their faculty members to develop, propose, and implement program and policy initiatives.
