SRU STEMM Strategy
The STEMM Strategy and Program is premised on the following principles:
- Create a culture where the importance of STEMM is recognized and valued, and there are high expectations for all students to engage with STEMM education opportunities.
- Expose students (and their teachers) to a wide range of career options and information early to help increase STEMM aspirations and engagement, ideally in primary schools and continuing throughout high school, and involving parents and school communities where possible.
- Recognise the STEMM education approaches work best, when supported by a whole-of-community collaborative effort.
- Build on student’s curiosity and connect STEMM learning to solving real world problems, including through collaborative and individual learning experiences that are hands-on and inquiry-based and support the achievement of deep knowledge.
- Encourage teachers to prioritise STEMM content knowledge when determining their professional learning needs, given the rapidly changing nature of science and technology.
- Use school demographic data and the local context to guide choices about partnership and outreach programs, and consider how best to target student cohorts less likely to do STEMM subjects or see the relevance of STEMM-related skills.
- Consider how to evaluate new partnerships and learning approaches as part of program design, to determine whether change has occurred in student attitudes to STEMM, and whether this translates into greater STEMM achievement.

ACADEMIC ADVISING AND SUPPORT
SRU’s advising program is based on a cooperative and under- standing relationship between the students and advisors. Under the SRU Plan, students have the final responsibility for designing their own educational experience at SRU which includes understanding all their degree requirements and making sure all those requirements have been satisfied for graduation. The role of the Faculty advisor is to help his/her advisees design a program of study which reflects the students’ interests and professional goals. While advisors are willing to suggest specific programs of study, they will not insist that students follow a particular path. Advisors also help students choose among academic alternatives, help them interpret catalog requirements and review degree audits and grade reports with them. Students are expected to understand these documents and their implications for academic progress and act accordingly.
Therefore, it is critical that students take the initiative to consult regularly with their academic advisors.
The Office of Academic Advising at SRU has three main areas of focus:
- General academic advising;
- Academic resources;
- Pre-health programs.
GENERAL ACADEMIC ADVISING:
Students can come to the Office of Academic Advising to get general advising help in areas such as course selection, academic status concerns, major and advisor selection, and individualized academic coaching. The Office of Academic Advising oversees programming for the First Year, including the Insight Program and the Insight Wellness course.
The academic coaching program includes counseling from an Academic Advisor in areas such as learning styles, effective study strategies, problem solving and critical thinking skills, and time management. Students work on setting their academic goals, discovering their strengths and weaknesses, and designing learning and study strategies that work best for them.
